Will You Tell Me if My Idea is No Good?

In a recent blog we described how IntoCeramics determines the viability of a project by turning unknowns into knowns using a staged process of investigation.

Sometimes it is easier.

It takes extreme integrity to tell someone what they do not want to hear in full transparency of the truth. At times we can come across as negative and dream killers- perhaps even labeled Dr. No. It is not from years of jaded experiences but years of reality. We have been involved in over a dozen start-ups to date and the ability t0 pivot the dream is critical when the data and cost objectives are stated this loudly.

Doing the Math, Not Selling the Dream

One firm that contacted us was formed by a small group of investors who had a material they thought would be perfect for a particular application. They were somewhat secretive and refused to talk about it over the phone. Instead, they insisted on visiting our Houston operations for a meeting.

When they arrived, they presented us with a good range of chemical analyses, mineralogy, and mining reserve information. They were much more prepared than many who contact us.

Despite this, the meeting didn’t last long.

We asked them: “OK, how much is this virgin material going to cost to get out of the ground?” Their answer was: “We estimate $750 per ton.” We had to tell them that this material would not even sell for that price in the current market conditions.

Their idea was no good, and we told them so.

They had great raw material, but there was no market potential at the production cost they had calculated. The truth is, we just saved the millions of dollars.

The Start of Something New

This tale is one of many that inspired us to start our IntoCeramics division.

Turning waste materials into viable products begins with a material that has zero value. Indeed, when that starting material requires treatment, incurs landfill costs, or is burdened by regulatory demands, it can be considered to have a negative cost.

Starting with a zero or negative cost material sure beats using $750 per ton virgin material!

That’s not just a financial insight… it’s a strategy for creating value in industries under constant cost pressure.

Ready to Evaluate Your Material or Waste Stream?

If you have an existing waste stream that fits this description or you’re sitting on undeveloped minerals because the economics need a boost to make sense, give us a call. We offer services in ceramics manufacturing, toll manufacturing solutions, research & development, granulation/extrusion forming, analytical testing services, and manufacturing consulting.

If there’s a pathway for turning your material into a valuable ceramic product, we’ll help you find it. And, if there isn’t, we’ll tell you so.

Contact IntoCeramics today to learn how our material analysis and product development experience can help you turn “maybe” into a smart go/no-go decision.

We help investors avoid expensive lessons in manufacturing.
